The Academy of Fine Arts of Palermo boasts a history that dates back to 1780, when Francesco Sozzi founded the “School of Design,” followed by the establishment of the “Academy of nude” (Accademia dell’Uomo Ignudo) in 1783, both aimed at training young people in the figurative arts. Over time, this prestigious institution has undergone significant transformations, such as its association with the Royal University in 1805 and the establishment of the Sculpture Chair in 1815, entrusted to Valerio Villareale. In 1879, the Academy became the “Royal Institute of Fine Arts,” solidifying its position as a center of artistic excellence. The three locations of the Academy reflect its rich architectural heritage: Palazzo Fernandez, inaugurated in 1886 and renovated in 2005, serves as the administrative heart and houses a library; Palazzo Molinelli di Santa Rosalia, a 16th-century gem renovated in 1975, hosts various art workshops; the Cantieri Culturali alla Zisa, located in the former Ducrot Factory, represent a rare example of Art Nouveau industrial archaeology, adapted to modern workshops including those for Sculpture, Painting, Scenography, Photography, and Design. The Academy carries out production and research activities in the artistic field in order to promote the achievement of educational objectives and to pursue high artistic, scientific and professional levels. The educational offer includes undergraduate programs at both first and second levels, graduate programs, and master’s programs aimed at ensuring comprehensive mastery of artistic methods and techniques, as well as the acquisition of specific disciplinary and professional skills. The institution fosters student and faculty mobility through collaborations with numerous national and international institutions to enhance the educational and professional experiences of its students. The Academy’s core values are: equality, inclusion, respect for differences, the importance of artistic practices in its educational mission, and the social utility and effectiveness of these practices. The Academy is committed to ensuring an inclusive environment, recognizing and valuing diversity in all its forms. The integration of students with disabilities is a priority, supported by specific initiatives and appropriate and suitable structures. The Academy promotes cultural activities by creating a dynamic and stimulating environment for the entire student community. Through its openness and active participation, the Academy of Fine Arts of Palermo stands not only as a center of educational excellence but also as a promoter of universal values, promoting art that unites and inspires and preparing its students to become not only talented artists, but also conscious and responsible citizens.
